Job Description

DESCRIPTION

The mission of the Student Health & Well-Being (SHW) cluster is to promote a culture of health and well-being for the student community, deliver equitable high quality innovative services, incorporate inclusive approaches, and celebrate diversity, with the goal of adoption and maintenance of healthy behaviors contributing to the academic success and personal development of all students.

The UC San Diego SHW cluster, which reports through UC San Diego Health System, plays a leadership role in creating a strong and active wellness culture that enables all students to flourish in body, mind and spirit. This includes promotion and the transformation of existing departments, under the oversight of the Executive Director, into a cohesive, trans-disciplinary source of integrated wellness services. The SHW cluster includes the departments of Student Health Services (SHS), Health Promotion Services (HPS), Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) and SHW Administration.

SHS provides oversight of primary urgent care, women's health and specialty care for a student body of over 43,000 undergraduate, graduate and professional students as well as supporting services including laboratory, pharmacy, imaging. SHS' multicultural, multidisciplinary and student-centered staff consists of physicians, nurse practitioners, registered nurses, Social workers, medical assistants, pharmacists, x-ray technologists, clinical laboratory scientists, medical lab assistant, administrative and other healthcare professionals. SHS provides integrated clinical services to address the medical needs of the individual students, as well as to foster the well-being of the students as a whole person. In addition, SHS supports the public health needs of the campus community. SHS is accredited by the Accreditation Association of Ambulatory Health Care and is fully committed to continuous quality and safety improvement through the utilization of data, outcome, and patient experience measurements.

The Student Health Clinical Nurse is responsible for providing ambulatory nursing assessment and care of primary health and urgent care patients in a student health setting. The role includes triage, health education and counseling with a particular focus on urgent care, women's health, family planning and immunization.

This appointment includes the role of student incoming health compliance, assisting in the process of UCSD University health requirements (tuberculosis screening & immunization).

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Current, valid, State of California RN license.

  • Current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS for Healthcare Professionals).

  • Minimum of six (6) months of experience working as a Registered Nurse.

  • RN experience working in Primary or Ambulatory Healthcare.

  • RN experience in an Urgent Care or Emergency Room.

  • Extensive knowledge of ambulatory/primary care and principles of first aid; skill to provide wound care and the application of dressings, proper use of heat/cold therapy, application of splints for immobilization of extremities; and demonstrated experience and skill in performing emergency procedures.

  • Extensive knowledge of reproductive health care and women's health issues including methods of contraception, sexually transmitted infection, pap smears and pregnancy.

  • Extensive knowledge of medical terminology and the use of basic medical equipment.

  • Extensive knowledge of Universal Precautions, isolation protocols, sterilization techniques and maintenance of asepsis.

  • Ability to communicate clearly and accurately both verbally and in writing. Excellent interpersonal skills, using tact and diplomacy in order to interact effectively with all levels of professional staff and a diversity of patients and a professional telephone manner.

  • Knowledge of routine, required and travel vaccinations pertinent to the College age population, as per CDC guidelines.

  • Demonstrated experience in using electronic medical records and understanding of medical record management.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • RN experience in a College Health Clinic.
  • RN experience in counseling in women's health and family planning.
  • Current certification in ACLS.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS
  • Employment is subject to a criminal background check and pre-employment physical.
  • Evening and weekend hours as scheduled.
  • Occasional travel may be required.
  • Must have access to reliable transportation to travel to off-site meetings and events.
  • Ability to telecommute for work, if/when needed and operationally feasible, as determined by department.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $123,902 - $173,659 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $59.34 - $83.17

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
