HJF is seeking a Research Physician II to provide scientific, technical, and programmatic support services to the identified program. The Physician is responsible for the treatment of patients during the progression of their disease and their participation in clinical research programs within established institutional policies and procedures, ensuring that all necessary steps are followed for safety and regulatory compliance, and for assuring accuracy of complex clinical documentation on patients' records, maintaining confidentiality. This position will provide support and/or direction for the execution of clinical research protocols and be at the Assistant or Associate Professor level.

This position will be in support of the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USUHS) Infectious Disease Clinical Research Program (IDCRP) and will be located at the Naval Medical Center in San Deigo, CA.

IDCRP is a U.S. Military tri-service research center headquartered within the F. Edward Hebert School of Medicine at USU. The Program conducts and coordinates clinical research conducted within military medical treatment facilities under the command and control of the individual medical Services, the Defense Health Agency (DHA), and approved non-military collaborators, e.g., Veterans Health Administration (VHA) medical treatment facilities, etc., with the consent of these commands, agencies, and partners. Its mission is to perform multicenter, observational, and interventional clinical infectious disease research within the Military Health System (MHS) that informs and improves the care of the Warfighter.

This position will provide support and/or direction for the execution of clinical research protocols, may also be referred as the Site Lead, and be at the level of Assistant or Associate Professor.

Note: This position requires incumbents to be U.S. Citizens.

Responsibilities
    Designs, directs, and participates in clinical research protocols in conjunction with active duty investigators, research physicians, and other scientists; develops a network of collaborating investigators and partners locally and regionally.
  • Directs and participates in the development and submission of clinical research protocols and other documentation to the Institutional Review Board (IRB), local human research protection program, sponsors, monitors, and/or Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
  • Provides evaluation and treatment of medical conditions, as appropriate to medical license and specialty board certification; maintains active clinical credentials including by providing care to non-research patients; provides clinical research education, training, and mentorship to trainees and others.
  • Assists in securing funding (writing, reviewing, and editing proposals, etc.)
  • Monitors and evaluates the quality and appropriateness of the clinical research program.
  • Analyzes clinical data. Prepares scientific abstracts and papers for presentation at local and national meetings and for publication in medical and scientific periodicals; also prepares and assists with program status reports to the institution, regulatory agencies, and sponsors of the clinical research programs.
  • May perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned or directed by the supervisor. This may include attendance of and participation in required training for role. A limited amount of travel may be required.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Thorough knowledge of clinical medicine and the procedures and techniques necessary for performing research tasks.
  • Fellowship training in Infectious Diseases; ABIM board certified or eligible.
  • Knowledge of medical science and the development of clinical research programs.
  • Experience (knowledge) in the design of clinical research trials.
  • Ability to communicate effectively.
  • Ability to make effective presentations and publish.
  • Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal skills.

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Assigned Lead: May recommend the following: employee hiring, disciplinary action, and starting salaries; provide input on employee performance evaluations.
Qualifications

Work Environment

  • This position will take place primarily in a clinic setting.

Education and Experience

  • Medical degree required.
  • Minimum of 3-5 years experience required.
  • Fellowship training in Infectious Diseases required; ABIM board certified or eligible.

Licenses and Certifications

  • Licensure to practice medicine within the continental United States; Board certified or board eligible for certification in the specialty associated with the clinical research program.

Compensation

  • The likely salary range for this position is $125,000 USD to $185,000 USD annually based on a 40-hour work week. This is not, however, a guarantee of compensation or salary. Final salary will be determined based on market analysis, experience, and education.

Some positions or sites may require that the incumbent be fully vaccinated against COVID-19. Proof of vaccination may be required.
