|Position Summary|| |
The University of New Mexico Cancer Center’s Clinical Research Office is recruiting for a Human Protections Specialist for the Quality Assurance Department. This position oversees, provides, and coordinates technical and administrative review of human research application materials prior to submission to the Institutional Review Board (IRB), providing support and guidance to investigators on content. Plans, organizes, and conducts audits of IRB-approved research to ensure compliance with all relevant laws, regulations, policies and guidelines, to protect human subjects, researchers, and the University, to assess clinical trial performance, and to discourage scientific misconduct in human subject research. Assists the IRB in planning and implanting training programs for faculty, staff, and administration in the conduct of biomedical research.
The University of New Mexico Comprehensive Cancer Center is the Official Cancer Center of New Mexico and the only National Cancer Institute-designated Cancer Center in a 500-mile radius. Its 146 board-certified oncology specialty physicians include cancer surgeons in every specialty (abdominal, thoracic, bone and soft tissue, neurosurgery, genitourinary, gynecology, and head and neck cancers), adult and pediatric hematologists/medical oncologists, gynecologic oncologists, and radiation oncologists. They, along with more than 600 other cancer healthcare professionals (nurses, pharmacists, nutritionists, navigators, psychologists and social workers), provide treatment to 65% of New Mexico’s cancer patients from all across the state and partner with community health systems statewide to provide cancer care closer to home. They treated 13,578 patients in 105,748 ambulatory clinic visits in addition to in-patient hospitalizations at UNM Hospital. A total of 1361 patients participated in cancer clinical trials, including 544 (40%) patients who participated in clinical trials testing new cancer treatments that include tests of novel cancer prevention strategies and cancer genome sequencing. The more than 102 cancer research scientists affiliated with the UNMCCC were awarded $36.2 million in federal and private grants and contracts for cancer research projects. Since 2015, they have published 930 manuscripts, and promoting economic development, they filed 136 new patents and launched 10 new biotechnology start-up companies. Finally, the physicians, scientists and staff have provided education and training experiences to more than 530 high school, undergraduate, graduate, and postdoctoral fellowship students in cancer research and cancer health care delivery. |Minimum Qualifications|| |
Bachelor's degree in Nursing, Biomedical Science, or closely related field; at least 3 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.
|Preferred Qualifications|| |
a. Bachelor's degree in science, health related field, or closely related field
b. Prior auditing experience, either in clinical research or health related field. Demonstrated ability and experiencing completing audits and quality improvement assessments.
c. Excellent problem solving and critical thinking skills.
d. Experience and understanding of federal regulations related to clinical research compliance and reporting.
e. Knowledge of accreditation and certification requirements and standards.
f. Word processing and/or data entry skills.
g. Knowledge of patient care charts, quality control practices and procedures within a hospital, patient care, registry environment, or strong knowledge of data collection techniques.
h. Ability to travel by car within New Mexico.
